1. Federal Shutdown updates
The federal government shutdown has now entered its third week, with no clear end in sight. Democrats continue to insist that any agreement must include an extension of Affordable Care Act tax credits that help working families afford coverage. Republicans, meanwhile, say they will not discuss that issue until after the government reopens.
In the meantime, the Trump Administration has begun permanently terminating thousands of employees from various federal agencies, adding to the disruption caused by the shutdown and increasing uncertainty for public employees and the communities they serve. However, on Wednesday a federal judge temporarily blocked the latest round of layoffs at most agencies. The Trump administration is expected to appeal the district court’s decision.
CSEA supports all sides entering negotiations to both reopen the federal government and ensure that working families do not see their health insurance premiums double because of Congress’s failure to extend these critical tax credits.

2. Judge Upholds Even-Year Elections Law
New York’s highest state court rejected arguments from several counties on Thursday that a state law approved to move most elections from odd- to even-numbered years violates the state Constitution. The law applies to town and county offices like county executive and town supervisor, which are generally elected in odd-numbered years, opposite the national and statewide elections. In order to transition to even years, there will be local government elections in 2025 and 2027; however, terms will be shortened so that next elections for these offices are held on even years.
3. Election Highlight: Jeff McCann for Greece Town Supervisor
CSEA has endorsed Jeff McCann for Greece Town Supervisor. As Deputy County Executive to Adam Bello, McCann has been involved with every major gain for Monroe County workers, from fair contracts to improved safety and respect on the job. CSEA has had no greater friend in county government, and electing McCann will ensure the same is true in the Town of Greece.
CSEA has endorsed candidates in all six regions across the state. You can find a list of our endorsed candidates here.
4. Voting Deadlines
October 25 is the deadline to register to vote in this November’s elections. If you’re mailing in your application, make sure it is received by your board of elections on or before that date. You can also register in-person at your local board of elections or any state agency on or before October 25. You can find more information about the 2025 elections here.
