Gloria Smith named PEOPLE Recruiter of the Year; Central Region takes PEOPLE Cup From left, Central Region activist and PEOPLE Recruiter of the Year Gloria Smith, Central Region PEOPLE Committee Chair Betty Jo Johnson, and Central Region President Colleen Wheaton share the PEOPLE Cup Trophy after it was presented to the Central Region at the 2015 CSEA Annual Delegates Meeting. CSEA’s PEOPLE program protects and improves our jobs, benefits and pensions in Washington, Albany and in your community. Your support and participation in PEOPLE strengthens CSEA’s clout in the workplace, in the legislature, in your community and in the labor movement. President’s Polar Cap Award goes to Central Region’s hardy fund-raisers BUFFALO — CSEA Central Region members are building PEOPLE power. Gloria Smith, a phlebotomist at SUNY Upstate Medical University Hospital and CSEA activist, was named the PEOPLE Recruiter of the Year. Smith, the Central Region PEOPLE Committee and region officers and activists also played a big role in earning the region the PEOPLE Cup. CSEA President Danny Donohue presented both awards at the recent Annual Delegates Meeting. Central Region President Colleen Wheaton accepted the PEOPLE Cup on behalf of the region. “At a time when labor is facing so many challenges, it’s important that union members like Gloria are out recruiting members for PEOPLE and helping to lead the fight to make sure our voice is heard,” Wheaton said. Smith recruited 111 new PEOPLE members over the past year. Among those new members were 23 new members in July, and 18 new PEOPLE members in September. Smith was named the PEOPLE recruiter of the month for both months. PEOPLE plays a major role in helping labor fight back against politicians who attack working people, a point that Smith stresses to members. “As we approach a presidential election year, it is more important than ever that we prepare ourselves for the fights ahead,” she said. “Joining PEOPLE gives us the ability to make our voice heard and lobby at every level of ‘our’ government. We need to be involved and we need to get out and vote. Voting is fighting back.” The Central Region, whose members are shown here plunging into Oneida Lake in late 2014, is once again the reigning President’ Polar Cap Award champion for raising the most money among CSEA region for the Special Olympics during the 2014-14 Polar Plunge season. The award was presented to the region at the 105th Annual Delegates Meeting.
