CSEA President Danny Donohue was honored with the Ambassador of Labor Award, which was presented to him by Guest of Honor, Sinn Fein President Gerry Adams, at the Annual Irish Echo Labor Awards which took place at the Edison Ballroom in Manhattan. Donohue joined other Irish American labor leaders who were recognized for their many contributions to social justice in Ireland and the labor movement. James T. Callahan, General President of the International Union of Operating Engineers, was awarded the Irish American Labor Leader of the Year Award. Irish Consul General Barbara Jones also participated in the event. In accepting his award, Donohue said, “The labor movement is more relevant now than ever. One just needs to consider that the current level of income inequality rivals that of the robber baron days.” “Working men and women deserve to be able to have a wage that allows them to provide for their families and protect their future,” said Donohue. “As someone once said, ‘they earned it.’ Historically, labor has and continues to build strong and vibrant communities which is in everyone’s best interest.” Given the many challenges confronting labor, Donohue expressed optimism in its ability to survive and thrive. “Labor has to adapt and it always has,” said Donohue. “Our members are necessary and valuable at every level of business and industry.” “We must continue to organize and not just in the traditional way but in those areas where we have never State contract negotiations: stay Donohue. in the loop! The labor force is the best source for innovative and new ideas to improve new ways of doing business across all industries,” said Donohue. — David Galarza Syracuse mayor proposes $15 minimum wage for city workers SYRACUSE — Mayor Stephanie Miner has proposed setting a minimum wage of $15 an hour for city workers. The move would increase wages for CSEA members employed by the city. Full-time workers who have worked for more than 10 weeks for the city as of Oct. 21 would be affected. “Mayor Miner deserves a lot of credit for stepping up on this issue,” said CSEA President Danny Donohue. “It sets a strong example for other elected officials to follow.” 2 The Work Force November 2015
