September 2023 Volume 3 | Issue 1:

Are you and your workplace prepared?

SEPTEMBER IS NATIONAL PREPAREDNESS MONTH!

National Preparedness Month is an observance held each September to raise awareness about the importance of preparing for disasters and emergencies that could happen at any time. Ready.gov has many resources for home preparedness and new resources for elderly adults. The national campaign’s slogan is “Take Control in 1, 2, 3!”

  1. Assess your needs,
  2. Make a plan
  3. Engage your support network to stay safe when disaster strikes.

Many regulations require employers to have emergency action plans to protect workers for “foreseeable” emergencies. If you have had a fire drill at your workplace, then you have been part of an implemented plan! Does your employer have a plan for a power outage, blizzard, earthquake, flood, train derailment or hazardous material spill/release? All of these events are foreseeable and have happened within the past year. Your local/unit leadership can contact your region’s occupational safety and health specialist for help with workplace emergency action plans.

SCHOOL BUSES ARE BACK ON THE ROADS

Summer moved quickly, and kids are back to school. This means those big yellow buses are back on the road transporting millions of students to and from school each day. Many of those drivers and aides on those buses are CSEA members! It’s their job to ensure the students on their bus make it to school and home safely every day. CSEA members are reporting an alarming number of drivers who speed past their stopped bus, with flashing red lights and regulatory stop sign. If those lights are flashing and that stop sign is out, a student is near the roadway!

Did you know that 113 people were killed in school transportation vehicles from 2012-2021?
