Assembly Ways & Means Chair to Retire

Assemblymember Herman “Denny” Farrell (D-Manhattan) previously announced that he would not run for reelection in 2018, but this week revealed that he will resign his Assembly seat on September 5. Farrell served in the Assembly for 42 years, including 25 years as chair of the powerful Ways and Means Committee.

 

Important Upcoming Election Dates

September 12th is Primary Day. In New York City and the counties of Nassau, Suffolk, Westchester, Rockland, Orange, Putnam and Erie, polls open at 6 A.M. and close at 9 P.M. In all other counties, polls open at 12 noon and close at 9 P.M. Find out more information about the races on your ballot from your county board of elections.

October 13th is the deadline to register to vote in the November 7th General Election.

 

Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

The fight for women’s suffrage in the United States began in New York with the first women’s rights convention at Seneca Falls in 1848. While the struggle would continue for more than 70 years, women were finally granted the right to vote when the 19th Amendment to the Constitution was ratified on August 18, 1920. New York was the fifth state to ratify the Amendment.
